Today, I want to tell you about my experience with the Themify Builder and later about the Themify Ultra theme. Themify is a template and plugin provider for WordPress that I’ve been using for my websites exclusively since 2013. All of their themes are top notch and easily customizable. They also have terrific customer service via their online forum. I have lost count of how many times I’ve needed some help with builder or my themes and they usually get back to me within a day or less. I highly recommend them if you’re in need of a new WordPress theme or need any of their remarkable plugins.

Builder Backend

So about the Themify Builder. The builder can be purchased by itself or it comes standard in every Themify theme sold. What it basically does is allow you to build pages and posts using simple drag and drop interface. You can do this either from the backend where you edit your posts/pages (seen at left) or the front end where you can see your edits in real time on your actual post/page. It’s rather straight forward and very easy to learn and work with.

The builder comes with several modules built-in or you can buy additional modules from Themify to further extend its capabilities. Whether you install additional modules from their Builder Addons Bundle or not, there are a LOT of modules to be used. In my opinion, a little too many for my day to day blogging. Thankfully, you can go into your Themify settings and “Exclude Builder Modules” as needed.

Frontend Builder

My personal preference is to work on the frontend with builder as seen at right. I can literally drag and drop modules from the pop-up menu on the left and add them directly to my post with live previews; you’ll be able to see immediately what you’re adding before hitting the DONE button on each module. I have to admit, the builder is so easy to use that it actually encourages me to use more modules, more often in my posts and pages.

Updaters

The builder and it’s modules are easy to update as well. Rather than using the traditional WordPress updater, you update by going to your Themify Settings where there are prompts at the top to update. Just enter your Themify username and password at the prompt, and it will update automatically. It only takes a few seconds per module to update depending on the speed of your server.

You can also copy/paste modules from the frontend or save your layouts for use on multiple posts. You can also duplicate modules on your page or duplicate entire pages. It’s incredibly useful for websites that have a lot of similar posts and pages. When I created my Dream 9 Studios website, I used the saved layouts feature to recreate a similar layout for each and every one of my artwork pages.

I don’t really have any critiques or anything remotely negative to say about the Themify Builder. I’ve been using it for so long that I can’t image blogging on WordPress without it!

The Themify Ultra theme is probably their most versatile theme available. While I didn’t use it to create this particular blog (this blog uses the Grido theme), I used Ultra to create both the Dream 9 Studios website and the Shelby Bly Project website. As you can see from how different those two websites look, it can be used to create just about any kind of website.

In the theme’s settings you can choose from a variety of header and footer designs plus a series of base color themes. It’s almost infinitely customizable. You could choose a base color then go into the color’s CSS file to change that color to whatever you prefer. I went for the slightly more challenging route of changing each element’s color via the Customizer for more control.

If you don’t have a “vision” in mind for your site, Ultra installs with several demo layouts and layout parts that you can activate then customize as needed. I myself haven’t used any of the demo content (yet) as I had an idea in my head what I wanted each of my websites to look like and used the theme’s many customizable elements to achieve my vision.

If you’re in the market for a new theme but can’t make up your mind which of Themify’s many themes would best suit you, chances are Ultra will satisfy all of your needs.

In summary, I really can’t imagine building my websites to be anywhere near as good as they are without Themify’s Builder and Ultra theme. I cannot possibly recommend them enough. As a tip, be sure to subscribe to their newsletter and you’ll get 20% off discount code!
