The Shelby Bly Project is my in-the-works graphic novel project that I have been working on and off and on and off for several years now (since late 2009 to be a little more precise). I have written the story for the novel myself and will be illustrating the whole thing, also completely by myself, using 3D models. It is a labor of love, almost an obsession, that I hope will pay off in some small way down the line once I have it finished and published. I do not have a concrete ETA on when it will be complete as I’m still knee-deep in the work of it. At this moment, the novel project is nearing the end of pre-production. Soon, I will begin actual production of the novel by rendering all of the illustrations.
Here is a little history on the project: I started brainstorming ideas for the novel in late 2009. I later, in 2012, finished the first version of the graphic novel which was, in my opinion, sub-par. In about 2013 or 2014, I was going to simply fix what I already had finished but then decided to instead start-over completely from scratch by rewriting the story, redoing all the characters, and finally rendering all brand new scenes. It’s now 2019 and I have finished writing the story, the concepts of all the characters, most of the props, and some of the settings. I will soon start work on the storyboards and then the actual illustrations.
The graphic novel will be fully illustrated using 3D models and digital painting. I will be utilizing the programs Poser, Zbrush, Photoshop, and others to complete the illustrations. Most of the models I will be using will be created by others but I am using them under license. Many of the textures and character morphs plus a few props will be/have been created by me. All of the scenes will be constructed and the figures arranged/posed by me. It’s a lot of very painstaking work but, as I already said, I’m very much hoping and believing that it will be well worth it in the end.
Here are some of the finalized concept art renders of the three lead “good guys” characters:
Here is the current version of the story introduction:
Shelby Bly is a twenty-something university student studying to be a simple historian with the goal of one day working in a temperature-controlled museum. Her father, Dr. Robert Bly, was once a globetrotting archaeologist and adventurer before his retirement but she never had plans to follow in his footsteps. This is mainly due to the very protective Dr. Bly always discouraging his daughter from doing anything remotely dangerous. The two plan to spend a quiet summer break at a dig site in Arizona to catch up on lost time but upon arriving at the site, all hell breaks loose. Unknown to Shelby, Dr. Bly has recently come out of retirement to uncover the one discovery which always eluded him; Vril. Learning of his plans to continue their work, his former partner Blair Nimway has concocted a plan to abduct Dr. Bly and force him to tell her all he has learned of the Vril and the Vril-ya. Using resources and mercenaries from her company, GEEVA, Blair plans to find the Vril for herself, no matter the cost. Refusing to sit by and do nothing after his abduction, Shelby decides to find the Vril Source herself and trade it for her father’s safe return. The truth is, although Shelby is determined, she has no idea what she’s doing out in the field. Luckily her father’s research assistant, Joel Rio, volunteers to help Shelby become the adventurer she never dreamed of becoming. Her best friend, Maia Avanti, will also aid Shelby by providing all the information Shelby will need by using the sources she has acquired since working to become a journalist. Shelby and her friends will have to outmaneuver the GEEVA mercenaries hired by Blair to get to the Vril first. Other interested parties whom have yet to reveal their true motives or identities are determined to either stop Shelby or help her for their own gain. Is the mythical substance known as Vril, which is said to have the power to both destroy and replenish life, real and will it ever be found? Do the guardians of the Vril, the Vril-ya still exist? Who else besides GEEVA is on the quest for the Vril? Can Shelby discover the truth before time runs out for her and her father? Will Shelby be able to become an adventurer like her father before her? Shelby’s life and the lives of those she loves all depend on the answers.
